Every home has a story— 155 Teaberry
A bit about Teaberry Cottage –by The Owners
Blackberry Road winds around pastures, fields and homes and dips under the Blue Ridge Parkway through a rock underpass. On the South side of the Parkway, a vista opens where you can see the steel and glass buildings of Charlotte on a crisp clear day – although it helps to know exactly where on the horizon to look. And this is where Huckleberry Knob is tucked away on the escarpment of the Blue Ridge along the rolling countryside. Teaberry Cottage is nestled at the top of hill amid flowing lawns, pockets of trees and woods, and well-laid gardens of flowering shrubs and evergreens.
Purchased as a two-bedroom, two-bath vacation home, remodeling and renovation began in earnest when the owners became fulltime High Country residents. The owners contracted a local architect who skillfully blended the old stone and shingle cottage into a spacious home with a total of 5 bedrooms, 5 baths and 5 fireplaces, yet preserving the character and charm of the original structure. The interiors are gracious and warm, punctuated with a cozy mountain elegance and a touch of English country home. Natural light streams in year round through abundant windows, illuminating vaulted, beamed ceilings, stone walls, wainscoting, hardwood floors and so much more.
Underscoring the informal sequence of generous, inviting rooms, now filled with soft, comfortable furniture and many paintings by local artists are the invisible but modern, state-of-the-art heating and cooling systems, tankless hot water heaters, modern electronic systems and surround sound, completely updated electric and plumbing systems, a whole-house back-up propane generator, and new Wolf-SubZero kitchen. On a snowy winter’s day, you can luxuriate in front of the fireplace, relaxed with the knowledge that the house is a snug and functioning shelter.
“That special feeling that mountain lovers know so well – that feeling of serenity and safety, that expansive and appreciative feeling of being in tune with the natural world of the mountains – floods over us each and every day. And all our friends, family and visitors have told us they feel it, as well.” The property is just under 3 acres of park-like lawns and gardens and accommodates varied spaces for entertaining and play. A hidden stone courtyard is slowly revealed as you walk by; a sheltered back deck spans the space between the living room and master bedroom and provides an outdoor sunny spot on even a cold winter day. The large stone patio with a ceiling of trees is enclosed by stone pillars and wrought iron railings and anchored by a large outdoor fireplace. Pull up your chair, toss on a log, and enjoy some of the finest conversations you’ve ever had. Or accommodate a large catered affair! “The patio will easily hold 6 table rounds of 8 – with room for more on the adjacent lawn. And because the land is fairly level, we have parked dozens of cars – no cliff side parking or steep and dangerous steps will interfere with entertaining a crowd here.”
“We take such delight in the wildlife here Teaberry Cottage. We enjoy the antics of acrobatic squirrels and count the multitude of birds at winter feeders. We sat quietly and watched as a large flock of 16 wild turkeys wandered our lawn. The wildlife camera snapped shots of an 8-point buck standing on his hind legs, plucking apples out of the apple trees. Our grandchildren have the run of the place for hiking in the woods, playing lawn games, throwing Frisbees for the dog, and blasting down the zip-line from the fort at the property line (which adjoins the Blue Ridge Parkway, U.S. Park Service), past the back of the house to the tree line. They pile into the golf cart and toodle around the yard and down to the creek on Huckleberry. We have set up archery targets and taught them how to shoot a compound bow. There is a stone-lined fire pit in the woods for nightly marshmallow roasts and star gazing. This place provides a safe but glorious freedom that kids need to experience.”
Teaberry Cottage is a heart-capturing home and property and surely one to revive many a city-dweller’s dream of seeking a more peaceful life amid the serenity and the beauty of the Blue Ridge. “As we reach another passage of our lives and leave Teaberry Cottage, our prayer is that this wonderful and special place will nurture and enfold another family the way it has ours.”
